Buggy

Buggy

A motion-activated firefly.

It’s powered by an ATtiny13a and a vibration spring switch.

True to it’s name – it was really buggy!

There are a bunch of different firefly patterns depending on where you live, but I designed an animation that looked like the fireflies where I grew up.

The boards achieve a pseudo-synchronization – if you’re in sync with someone, you tend to move at the same time which naturally synchronizes the patterns coming from multiple boards.

I thought it would be cool to use the fiberglass substrate as a diffuser for the phosphorescent organ.

I put copper on the reverse side to give it a darker look than the wires.

I thought bare traces on bare fiberglass would show the translucent wings well. I think it’s a beautiful effect.
